What is Hernia? A hernia occurs when an internal organ or body part protrudes through the muscle or tissue wall that contains it. A hernia is diagnosed during a clinic visit by a physical examination. Your doctor may ask you to stand, cough or strain to do an accurate diagnosis. However, if the bulge is not visible, your doctor may suggest imaging tests like CT scan, MRI or abdominal ultrasound.
